Hi everyone – I imagine that most of you are feeling shocked and fearful today. It’s hard to process not just the tragic assassination of a young father, but also the immediate and vicious rhetoric on both sides of the political divide. Many will try to tell you that they know why it happened and they know what’s coming next – they don’t, no-one does, and when people say they do, they’re projecting their own fears. That’s instinctive and understandable: as humans, we crave certainty and tend to gravitate towards those that we think have it – but it’s not helpful. We don’t know what’s coming next for the big picture, other than more change. And what helps us focus on the day-to-day is remembering why we care about who we are, what we do and who we value.

Every day, but especially today – a sombre anniversary, still shocking 24 years later – we should also remember that the world has plenty that is ugly and dangerous, but also plenty that is beautiful and uplifting. We are affected by both, but we can choose what consumes us.

Be kind to yourself and others today.
